Course overview

The future presents significant challenges for managing the environment, infrastructure and technological developments. Effective solutions to these challenges will require innovative engineering, applied science and design strategies. At Sydney City Campus, we will prepare you to take on those challenges and succeed. The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree covers major engineering domains, including civil, electrical and mechanical. You will get the opportunity to experience many facets of engineering before deciding on the area of specialisation at the end of first year.

Course structure

This course requires successful completion of 320 credit points which includes eight core subjects, nineteen key program subjects taken in an engineering specialisation (Civil, Electrical and Mechanical), four alternate subjects, and one elective subject at level 2 above, which can be chosen from any discipline available at Sydney City Campus.

Recommended sequence

At Sydney City Campus, you can complete your four-year bachelor’s degree in three years and enter the workforce sooner. This bachelor’s degree consists of 32 subjects. With our flexible academic calendar, you can study 12 subjects in one year over three trimesters. However, we recommend that you undertake a maximum of 3 subjects per trimester so that your study load is not too demanding. You will have less downtime between trimesters so a lighter study load will help you to have a better chance at passing all of your subjects.

Career opportunities

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) with the key program in Civil Engineering, you may work in designing, constructing and managing buildings, highways, airports, water supply, sewerage systems, and large infrastructure projects.

Electrical

The Electrical program covers electronic components, electromagnets, computers, power generation, distribution systems, communications and control.

Career opportunities

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), with a key program in Electrical Engineering, career opportunities include:

  • working in communications
  • electromagnetics
  • power and energy systems
  • public utilities
  • telecommunications,
  • manufacturing
  • electrical systems
  • renewable energy systems.

Mechanical

The mechanical engineering program covers the design of mechanical systems for a wide range of applications, including manufacturing, transportation and energy conversion.

The course delivers fundamental engineering principles, as well as an intensive hands-on laboratory program to provide the skills necessary for the design of machines, ensuring their functionality, safety and reliability.

Career opportunities

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), with a key program in Mechanical Engineering, you may work in industries such as the mining industry, biomedical applications, building services, energy generation and conservation, manufacturing, transportation and aerospace.

Work integrated learning

Students will need to complete 12 weeks of industrial experience which is a compulsory component of the degree. Through Navitas Professional at the Sydney City Campus, we can help you to find a placement where you can apply your learning and determination in the real world.

Professional recognition

Provisional Accreditation from Engineers Australia at the level of Professional Engineer.

Pathway option

Pathway options are available for students who may not qualify for direct entry into a degree program at Western Sydney University. Complete a diploma at SIBT and enter the second year of your university studies.

*Important note

All students undertaking the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) are required to undertake a readiness test prior to finalising enrollment. The readiness test will determine whether a student will study Mathematics for Engineers Preliminary or Mathematics for Engineers 1. Students who undertake Mathematics for Engineers Preliminary will be required to complete Mathematics for Engineers 1 during a subsequent trimester.
