For your first few days in Australia, you will need to have a bit of Australian currency in cash. You should also ensure that you have about $2000-$3500 in bank draft/travellers cheques (in your name).

You will also need an Australian bank account so that you can pay your bills, receive income from work and receive international money transfers. Listed below are the ‘big 4’ banks that people in Australia have an account with:

  • Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ)
  • Commonwealth Bank (CommBank)
  • National Australia Bank (NAB)
  • Westpac Banking Corporation

Ensure that you do some research between the 4 banks so that you choose the one that’s best for you.

You may also be able to apply for an account online before you finalise your account in-person at the bank. When you arrive at the bank, you should have personal identification on you such as your passport, proof of current address and contact details, money to deposit and your student visa or Confirmation of Enrolment (this is required if you are applying for a student account).

Once your account is open, you will receive a debit card which can be used to purchase items in-store or with your own money. You can also visit an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) with your debit card to withdraw cash.
